A point-in-time count conducted in January showed a 50% rise in people experiencing homelessness on the Mid-Shore since last year, according to results released earlier this month. The Star Democrat reports the count is an annual survey that measures homelessness across the U.S. This year, Mid Shore Behavioral Health’s Continuum of Care team contributed by gathering data from individuals in encampments, shelters and temporary housing in Talbot, Kent, Dorchester, Caroline and Queen Anne’s counties. In addition to the 50% rise, the Mid-Shore saw a 400% rise in total unsheltered homelessness since 2024, according to the results of the count. According to the count, The total number of people experiencing homelessness on the Mid-Shore sits at 195, with 179 people in sheltered locations and 16 in unsheltered locations.

KCPS Needs To Eliminate 36 Positions To Fix Budget, Says Superintendent
To “right size” the budget for fiscal year 2026, Kent County Public Schools needs to eliminate 36 positions, Superintendent Mary McComas told the Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday night, April 14. The Evening Enterprise reports According to McComas’ draft budget presentation, KCPS is facing an approximately $2 million deficit between revenue and expenditures for the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2025.
The school system is expected to bring in $30.9 million in funds from local, state and federal sources, but has projected expenditures of $32.7 million.

Woman Hospitalized After Fire In Chestertown
An adult female was transported to the hospital in Chestertown for treatment of injuries sustained in what officials described as a “vehicle fire” on Friday afternoon, April 11. According to a news release from the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, the injuries were not life-threatening. The Evening Enterprise reports the occupant of a Sunline Solaris camper trailer, identified in the news release as Dawn Reed, discovered the fire at 2:18 p.m. in the 100-block of Dogwood Court in Queen Anne’s County. Reed was sleeping inside the camper trailer when one of her pet dogs alerted her to the fire.
League Of Women Voters Event In Chestertown April 24th
Ken Kozel, president and CEO of University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, will be the keynote speaker at a League of Women Voters of Kent County-sponsored program on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chestertown firehouse. The Evening Enterprise reports Kozel will review the changes that have occurred over the past 10 years at UM Shore Regional Health, including the evolution of the health system and the regional medical center under construction in Easton.
Man Charged After QAC Traffic Stop
The Queen Annes County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy recently pulled over a vehicle on Rt. 300 that was repeatedly flashing its high beam head lamps approximately 100 feet from his vehicle.
The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, later identified as Charles Livingston. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined Livingston had given a false name before later admitting who he actually was. A routine check of his license determined it was suspended and that he had two outstanding bench warrants.
QACPS Budget Projects $2 Million Shortfall
The adjusted draft FY26 budget for Queen Anne’s County Public Schools (QACPS) still projects a shortfall of $2.08 million. While the projected deficit was reduced by over half a million, it remains significant. The adjusted budget anticipates $129.16 million in spending, a $10.72 million increase, while projected revenue is $8.64 million higher. Despite this, a shortfall remains, partly due to a projected $433,000 decrease in state funding.
