The US 50/301 Ramp Management Pilot Program continues this weekend with an adjustment to the timing of the closures.
These detours will be active from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays, and Labor Day. Duke Street will be closed and blocked at the intersection of Duke Street and Island Plaza Court (AKA Cleet Street). MD 8 (Business Parkway/Romancoke Road, Exit 37) will also be closed. Drivers will continue to have access exiting US 50/301 onto MD 8 and MD 18 but will not have access to enter onto westbound US 50 at these locations.

Follow up to a story we told you about earlier this week; Chesterdown Police say multiple suspects have been identified in the thefts of rainbow Pride flags and other rainbow-themed items over the weekend. Chief Ron Dixon confirms to the Evening Enterprise that all but one of the suspects are adults and are not local. The theft locations included Cross Street, High Street, Greenwood Avenue and Philosophers Terrace. In addition to theft, charges could include a hate crime and malicious destruction of property.

The Town of Chestertown is requesting sealed proposals for a professional landscaping firm to build out approved improvements to Memorial Park in the Town of Chestertown. The Town maintains a set of detailed planting plans and pathway within the park. Questions regarding this RFP will be accepted in writing only, to the Town of Chestertown Town Manager, Lawrence DiRe at townmanager@Chestertown.com before 2:00PM, EDT, on June 26, 2024.

Kent County Public Schools is offering free meals during the summer for all children 18 and younger. The Evening Enterprise reports no application is required and children do not have to be enrolled in Kent County Public Schools. Meals will be available for pickup Mondays through Thursdays, now through Aug. 8th at Galena Elementary School, HH Garnet Elementary, Rock Hall Elementary and Kent County High School.

Queen Anne’s County Government is asking residents what they would like to see at the Old Outlet location at Kent Narrows if it were re-developed? Officials point out that Queen Anne’s County Government does not own this property, they’re simply gathering ideas and feedback from the community to share with the property owner. Chestertown Police report that over the weekend, several locations in town were victims of crimes related to Pride flags and related items. In a Facebook post, the department says officers have been working diligently on these incidents and have identified numerous suspects, who are not local to the area. Appropriate charges will be forthcoming. The post goes on to say this type of hate will not be tolerated, and if you are a victim of anything similar, contact police at (410) 778-1800.

A prisoner who took off from the Anne Arundel County Jennifer Road Detention Center last week was nabbed in Queen Anne’s County. James Cash Gregory, of Washington D.C. escaped late Thursday morning and was arrested Friday morning after State Police and other agencies located him in Queen Anne’s County. Gregory now faces multiple charges in Anne Arundel County District Court including theft, trespassing, concealment of a dangerous weapon, and now escape 2nd degree.

Turtles in the spotlight in Queen Anne’s County, where June is Turtle Awareness Month. Experts say turtles face numerous threats, including habitat loss, pollution, illegal trafficking, and climate change. Many turtle species are now endangered, and it is our collective responsibility to protect them, and the Chesapeake Tidewater Region, including Queen Anne’s County, is home to a variety of turtles—11 of Maryland’s 19 species, to be exact. Ways you can help them include assisting turtles crossing roads, but only if it is safe for both you and the turtle. Avoid disturbing nesting turtles or those laying eggs. Protect and promote turtle habitats whenever possible, and never remove or transport turtles to different regions.

Monday night’s Chestertown Mayor and Council meeting happens at 6pm with a number of items on the agenda. They’ll discuss payment of bills and operating funds on hand. Also, Steven Atkinson is scheduled to be appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Members and the mayor will hear reports from the town manager and the police chief. Talk will also go to community block grants, energy efficient products and the location of the downtown bathroom.
